The Research Centre on Interactive Media, Smart System and Emerging Technologies – RISE, announces 16 full-time equivalent positions for research associates under various Multidisciplinary Research Groups (MRGs). RISE is an equal opportunity employer and the positions are open to everyone, internationally. Applicants outside the EU may require a work visa for Cyprus.
RISE is a newly founded research centre in Cyprus aiming to become a centre of excellence empowering knowledge and technology transfer in the region. It is a joint venture between the Municipality of Nicosia, the Max Planck Institute for Informatics (Germany), the University College London (UK) and the three public universities of Cyprus - University of Cyprus, Cyprus University of Technology, and the Open University of Cyprus. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme H2020-WIDESPREAD-01-2016-2017 (Teaming Phase 2) under grant agreement No. 739578, as well as from the Cypriot Government, local and international partners, and other sponsors.
The research focus of RISE is on interactive media. Interactive media have become an integral part of our lives, changing the way that information is conveyed to the user and the ways users interact with devices, with other people, and with the world around them. Research in RISE integrates the Visual Sciences, Human Factors & Design, and Communications & Artificial Intelligence, in a tight synergy that provides a unique interdisciplinary research perspective that emphasizes an “Inspired by Humans, Designed for Humans” philosophy. There are up to two (2) full-time equivalent research positions for each of the following MRGs:

  1. V-EUPNEA: Living, Breathing Virtual Worlds
    Research focus on the simulation, analysis and visualization of life (virtual humans, crowds, traffic) in Virtual Worlds at different scales and levels of realism. Our goal is to build as realistic as possible virtual worlds to improve upon the physical world.
  2. Visual Computing
    Research focus on understanding real environments at multiple scales and increasing complexity (e.g., objects, indoor scenes, outdoor scenes, buildings and ultimately urban environments), thus bridging the gap between virtual and physical worlds.
  3. Learning Agents and Robots
    Research focus on reinforcement learning, deep learning, optimization, control, multiagent systems and computational intelligence methods for creating autonomous software and robotic agents that learn to solve tasks and adapt to dynamic environments.
  4. DeepCamera: The Next Generation of Smart Cameras
    Research focus on developing and seamlessly integrating a robust and reliable level of deep-learning approach (e.g., intelligence), into existing camera hardware (e.g., high-end/low-end sensors to create what we can call a smarter-camera system) that will provide robust and reliable data acquisition, storage, manipulation/feature extraction, computer vision task-driven decisions, and visualization of acquired input camera data, thereby overcoming the limitations of existing imaging/video pipeline solutions.
  5. SuPerWorld
    Research focus on technology in pervasive computing, which touches upon research that focuses on the real world towards (contributing in) making it more sustainable. An important goal would be to enable pervasive eco-systems by means of “Internet of Things” (IoT) and “Web of Things” (WoT) protocols and principles, towards common understanding and semantics of real-world services and data, and high interoperability among systems and infrastructures. The general domains of the SuPerWorld MRG are “smart cities” and “sustainable environments”. More specific application areas involve food safety, smart agriculture, disaster monitoring, environmental and wildlife monitoring, legal migration, tourism and promotion of digital heritage, urban landscapes and infrastructures, robotics, as well as the future smart grid and energy communities.
  6. Immersive Technologies for Intelligent and Creative Applications (ITICA)
    Research focus on bringing together elements from fine arts with computational intelligence and emerging technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) to develop evidence-based applications. A key objective is to use interactive media, smart systems and emerging technologies in service of the arts and produce outcomes that will bring innovation and creativity in the dissemination of scientific results.
  7. Digitally Enhanced Urban Environments
    Research focus on the integration of city and human data with the goal of providing enhanced insights for both citizens and city stakeholders. The group will focus on the collection, combination and analysis of multi-source data that will allow for real-world solutions. Multidisciplinarity is embedded in the group’s formation and it will allow the cooperation with all other RISE research groups.
  8. Socially-Competent Robotic and Agent Technologies (SCRAT)
    Research focus on machine learning, computational learning theory, natural language processing and generation, preference elicitation, symbolic knowledge representation, commonsense reasoning, formal argumentation, cognitive computing, and explainable AI. Work will be undertaken towards the development of cognitive assistants for human task-solving, and towards the development of machine-mediated solutions for human-to-human interaction.
  1. Smart Networked Systems
    Research focus on Computer Networks, Protocols for IoT and Multimedia Communications, 5G Technologies, Security, Edge/Fog and Mobile Cloud Computing, and Smart City Applications. Research will be conducted related to Traffic Offloading, Relaying, D2D communication, and Edge computing in 5G wireless networks.

  • Bachelor's degree and/or postgraduate degree in a relevant field (e.g. Interactive Media, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering) from an accredited institution
  • Excellent knowledge of both spoken and written English language
  • Previous research experience and high impact research publications will be considered an advantage
  • Previous relevant industrial experience will be considered an advantage
  • Previous grant-writing experience will be considered an advantage
  • For non-EU applicants a work permit will be required
Candidates are expected to have the following additional qualifications depending on the group they are interested in applying for:

V-EUPNEA: Living, Breathing Virtual Worlds
  1. Excellent programming skills, preferably in Object Oriented Programming Languages (C++/C#/Java) and/or Python.
  2. Experience with a game engine such as Unity, Unreal and Godot.
  3. Demonstrated excellence in algorithms and data structures.
  4. Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and excellent problem solving skills.
  5. Strong mathematical background will be considered an advantage.
  6. Previous experience with Machine Learning and Deep Learning, especially with frameworks such as Tensorflow, Keras, Torch, Caffe and scikit-learn will be considered an advantage.
  7. Prior publications in the area (or related areas) are desirable but not essential.

Visual Computing
  1. Postgraduate degree with emphasis on Computer Graphics / Computer Vision / Machine Learning.
  2. Strong coding skills in Python, Matlab, C++, C (experience with CUDA is an advantage).
  3. Confidence in mathematics (e.g., linear algebra, geometry processing, probabilistic methods).
  4. Proven experience with ML/DL frameworks (e.g. TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, FastAI).
  5. Knowledge of Conda package and environment management system, Docker or Kubernetes will be considered an advantage.
  6. Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and excellent problem solving skills.
  7. Prior publications in the area are desirable but not essential.

Learning Agents and Robots
  1. Postgraduate degree with emphasis on Reinforcement Learning / Planning / Control / Deep Learning / Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence.
  2. Experience with modern machine learning libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, Keras, Caffe, scikit-learn).
  3. Strong coding skills in Python and/or C++.
  4. Team player with self-motivation and the ability to work independently, rapidly prototype, learn quickly and explain complicated concepts in simple terms.
  5. Strong mathematical background will be considered an advantage.
  6. Experience with CUDA or parallel programming (e.g., MPI) will be considered an advantage.
  7. Experience with ROS, robotic simulators (e.g., Gazebo, V-REP) or physics engines (e.g., Bullet, ODE, MuJoCo) will be considered an advantage.

DeepCamera: The Next Generation of Smart Cameras
  1. Postgraduate degree with emphasis in Image/Video processing, Computer Vision, Color Imaging, Computer Graphics.
  2. Strong knowledge of Deep Learning (DL) approaches.
  3. Strong programming skills C/C++, Python and Matlab.
  4. Strong mathematical background is highly desired.
  5. Previous experience in DL framework (i.e., Keras, Tensorflow, Pythorch, Caffe, ski-learnt).
  6. Previous experience in integrating algorithms in an embedded system (i.e., nvidia jetson) and/or mobile devices considered a plus.
  7. Previous experience in grant-writing considered a plus.
  8. Previous high-impact publication in the field considered a plus.

  1. Self-motivation, ability to work independently, and excellent problem solving skills.
  2. Good programming skills in Python, C++, C and/or Java.
  3. Experience with ML/DL frameworks (e.g., R, TensorFlow/Keras).
  4. Some knowledge of sensors and sensor technologies and/or low-power communication protocols considered a plus.
  5. Mobile application development for Android/iOS considered a plus.
  6. Experience in emerging technologies, such as IoT/WoT, remote sensing (aerial photography based on drones and satellite-based imagery), GIS and data visualization, robotics, etc., considered another plus.
  7. Regarding points #4 and #5 above, the willingness to learn some of these technologies is essential. If needed, training will be provided.
  8. Prior publications in the area are desirable but not essential.

Immersive Technologies for Intelligent and Creative Applications (ITICA)
  1. Experience with gaming engines such as Unity3D, Unreal, Vizard or Godot.
  2. Good programming skills in Python, C++, C# and/or Java.
  3. Experience with ML/DL frameworks (e.g., R, TensorFlow/Keras).
  4. Mobile application development for Android/iOS considered a plus.

Digitally Enhanced Urban Environments
We are looking for two candidates to help collect, integrate and analyse data from both IoT sensors and the Web/Social media. To this end, successful candidates will be complimentary to each other.

The following competencies are required for both positions:
  1. Self-motivated individuals eager to learn and test new technologies.
  2. Any programming language with a main focus in Python, R, C#.
  3. Excellent communication skills both written and oral.
  4. Experience in research publications considered a plus.
  5. Experience in research proposal writing considered a plus.

Depending on the direction of each position, any of the following may also be required:
  1. Experience with Data Science, ML/DL frameworks.
  2. Experience with Natural Language Processing tools, libraries and frameworks.
  3. Experience with Internet of Things technologies, web/social data collection, data visualization.
  4. Knowledge of SQL and No-SQL databases.
  5. Proven experience in setting-up and using Cloud environments (Azure, AWS, Google Cloud).
  6. Proven experience with web frameworks.
Socially-Competent Robotic and Agent Technologies (SCRAT)
  1. M.Sc. / Ph.D. from an accredited university in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cognitive Systems, Cognitive Science, or related area. (Candidates with other backgrounds but with an otherwise solid profile may also be considered.)
  2. Very good knowledge of English, especially in reading technical / research articles.
  3. Ability to independently identify problems and carry out research work within the scope of the MRG.
  4. Excellent programming skills (e.g., C, C++, Python, Java), mathematical maturity, and ability to learn quickly.
  5. Mobile application development skills for Android / iOS is considered an advantage.
  6. Interest / past work in Smart Personal Assistants or Human-Machine collaboration applications is desirable.
Smart Networked Systems
  1. Postgraduate degree (MSc, PhD) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronic Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  2. Previous research experience and publication record will be considered a significant advantage.
  3. Research experience in Traffic Offloading or Relay Node Selection, or D2D protocols.
  4. Understanding of Mobile Edge, Fog, and Mobile Cloud Computing.
  5. Good knowledge of radio resource allocation and management.
  6. ackground of current technology trends in 5G such Network slicing, virtualization and SDN/ NFV.
  7. Very good programming skills in C/C++ and MATLAB.
  8. Effective verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work in an international team.
  9. Motivated candidates with strong mathematical and/or algorithm development backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
The successful candidates will have the opportunity to conduct fundamental and/or applied research in the aforementioned areas. Where applicable, candidates may also participate in the preparation of project reports and deliverables, research proposals for funding, software development, and travel abroad for dissemination activities. Furthermore, successful candidates will be encouraged to publish/present their research results in prestigious international conferences and journals.
