Emerging trends and funding opportunities in IoT research

Invited Talk: Sotiris Nikoletseas

Abstract

We will first focus on an emerging technology trend in IoT research: following the vision of Nikola Tesla, how can we efficiently transfer wireless power (WPT)in IoT-systems? The talk will discuss suitable models and fundamental laws, interesting phenomena (super-additive/cancellative power) as well as efficient algorithms for WPT. Also, how to combine efficient provisioning of wireless power with effective control of electromagnetic radiation (EMR).

In the second part of the talk, we will present ongoing research projects of our team, as well as potential research funding collaborations with RISE.Such activities include energy harvesting for IoT in smart transport, applications of wearables to smart health (allergy prediction), efficient deployments of electric vehicles, noise/pollution monitoring in smart cities, industrial IoT applications, as well as crowdsourcing and twitter analytics for privacy and cybersecurity.

BIO

Sotiris Nikoletseas is a Full Professor at the Computer Engineering and Informatics Department of Patras University, Greece. Also, the Director of the SensorsLab at the Computer Technology Institute and Press "Diophantus" (CTI), Greece. He has been a Visiting Professor at the Universities of Geneva, Ottawa and Southern California (USC).

His research interests include algorithmic aspects of wireless sensor networks, IoT systems, test-beds and novel applications, wireless energy transfer protocols, probabilistic algorithms and random graphs, algorithmic engineering.

He has coauthored over 200 publications in international Journals and refereed Conferences, 3 Books (on the Probabilistic Method, on theoretical aspects of sensor networks, on wireless power) and 40 Invited Chapters in Books by major publishers. He has served as the Steering/Program Committee Chair of several Conferences, and as Editor of major Journals (like TCS, IEEE TC, COMNET, Ad Hoc Networks). He has initiated international events related to sensor networks (ALGOSENSORS, DCOSS). He has delivered several invited talks and tutorials.
He has coordinated several externally funded R&D Projects, mainly by the European Union (EU) in FP7 and H2020, as well as large-scale national research projects and direct industrial contracts.
