Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality:
Emerging Technologies in the 21st Century

Invited Talk - 5 March, 10:00-11:00, Julia House

Augmented reality (AR) and Virtual reality (VR) technologies are growing in popularity in teaching and learning due in part to powerful new technologies. What has yet to be well established is when and with which learners and learning tasks these technologies can be used as an effective approach. In my talk, I will present our work in AR as well as VR. The first study was to evaluate the highly interactive cloud classroom (HIC) system, which incorporates augmented reality, virtual reality and cloud-classroom to teach basic materials science courses. The second study was to develop a cost-effective, man–machine digital interface, to improve students’ real-world firing range training results. In the third study, we examined the effectiveness of using AR-based formative assessment for improving elementary students’ learning achievement and motivation. In the next study, we investigated the effect of AR-based instruction on students’ visual attention Finally, I will present our recent work about the application of AR in teaching coding.
